Christmas Races

Trysport Christmas Duathlon – 28th December

Here’s the making of a race with real personality.

Padraic Quinn who does the Tour de France commentary on TG4 is behind this one.  Padraic is the guy who referred to Jan Ullrich’s love of  ‘Caca Milis’!!!  There’s a limit of 400 entries, even though no Duathlon in Ireland has ever had 400 entries, there’s an ambition that reminds me of my press release for TriAthy this January.  Plus the course looks great.

“An Cheathrú Rua in the heart of Connemara will play host to Ras Na Nollag. A variety of fun and challenging races will unfold throughout the day beginning with a fun bike race and pedal go-kart race for Kids of all ages, starting at 11.00am. The duathlon features one of the most scenic and diverse courses in Ireland. The race features a 7km run followed by a 22 km cycle. The run section takes in views of Great Mans Bay. While the bike section sweeps out around Loch an Mhuilinn”.

10th Roundwood Biathlon – 27th December.

Despite the name no guns are required for this duathlon.  Roundwood in Wicklow is the highest village in Ireland, which gives a feel for the course.  As a word of caution, this is a mountain race suited to mountain runners.  Top local triathletes like Tom Kelly (Piranha Tri Club) have come a cropper to mountain runners on this course.

The 10th annual Roundwood biathlon will take place on 27th of December at 2pm, from outside Kavanaghs Pub/Vartry House.

The event itself consists of a 2 mile run, followed by a 5 mile cycle to the finish (all distances approximate).participants vary from elite cyclists/tri folk/MTB’ers/hillrunners to women pushing their kids round the lake. It’s a great event, followed by mighty soup and craic in Kavanaghs..auction, set dancing, etc etc..all welcome.

All monies raised go to cancer/leukaemia research. We have run this event since 2000 and with your support have given over €80,000 to this cause“.

New Years Day Triathlon – Edinburgh

Anybody looking for a triathlon over the holidays can head to Scotland.  Surprisingly this is the 2nd largest triathlon in Scotland.  Full details are here.

The key feature of this race is King Arthur’s seat; a mountain in the center of Holyrood park. You’ll cycle over it three times and run over it once.

It attracts a quality field as well.  The last time I did it in 2004, Gavin Noble had to run his way from 4th position off the bike onto the podium (2004 results).
