Race Report from Waterford Triathlon Club’s Helen White.

Last weekend, we held the 1st race of our 2010 Duathlon series in Butlerstown with a large entry of 150 athletes. We returned to this tough course after a 3year absence due to road works, which is very spectator friendly with 3 laps on the bike sandwiched between a 5k run and 3k run. The weather was fabulous which made it enjoyable to both spectate and participate.

Paul Gallagher from Cork Tri club was the 1st into Transition after the 5k run with a 7second lead over James Curran, also from Cork Tri and John Meade 10secs behind. Paddy Quinn from Ennis Tri and our own Chris Mintern who is still only 15yrs old were hot on their heels.

The 20k bike is quite tough with 2 hills to be contended with 3 times so it suited the strong cyclists. This was ideal for former cyclist Eddie O’Donoghue from Carrick Tri club who, after posting the fastest bike split of the day, headed out onto the 2nd run in 1st place. James Curran maintained his 2nd place heading out with John Meade and Paddy Quinn also fighting for a podium position. John had the strongest legs and fought his way to the front to win the race in 1.01.55. James Curran, again maintained his position to finish 2nd overall in 1.02.05 with Paddy Quinn overtaking Eddie on the sharp hill to claim 3rd place in 1.02.22.

In the ladies race, Niamh Richardson was just a few seconds ahead of Joyce Wolfe of Cork Tri heading into transition after the 1st run with Diane Behan from Carrick Tri not far behind but Joyce showed her strength and experience on the bike to gain almost 4mins lead on Niamh and 6mins on Diane when heading out onto the 2nd run. She maintained her lead to win the ladies race in 1.06.33. Niamh held on to 2nd place to finish in 1.10.39 with Diane in 3rd place in 1.13.05.

Chris Mintern of Waterford Tri Club was the runaway winner of the Junior category, also giving the senior athletes a run for their money as he finished in 5th place overall in 1.04.20. He was very brave to carry on with the race after the crashed off his bike coming into Transition after his shoe caught his saddle on dismounting. His 1st bike crash but he was lucky to escape with a few cuts and grazes. Pierre De Leaster from Sportif Waterford Cycling Club was 2nd Junior home in 1.10.52 with Louis O’Carroll from Waterford Tri in 3rd place in 1.12.36. Aoife Trihy won the female Juniors in 1.39.43.

The Vet category was also hotly contested with John Casey from Carrick Tri leading into transition after the 1st run with Rolf Power also from Carrick Tri and Kevin O’Brien from Waterford Muay Thai just seconds behind. Kevin pushed hard on the bike to gain a 20sec lead over Rolf heading out onto the 2nd run with John a minute behind. They all ran similar times for the run to remain in their positions with Kevin 1st vet home in 1.04.28, 6th overall, with Rolf 8th overall and 2nd vet in 1.04.54 and John Casey 3rd vet in 1.05.58.

Deirdre Keane was a clear winner of the female vet category, just narrowly missing out on a top 3 podium finish, to finish in 1.13.36. Nora Morrissey of Sportif Waterford Cycling Club was 2nd female vet in 1. 24.20 with Edwina Butler just overtaking Olive Costello, both of Waterford Tri Club, on the final hill to claim 3rd vet in 1.28.49.

Our next race will be held in Fenor on Sat. 24th April at 11am.
