Irish Duathlon Championships 2010 – Burnfoot Donegal

All change for the new decade at the Irish Duathlon Championships in Donegal. In fact nobody who had won a duathlon championships in the last ecade even made it onto the podium. Jo Lynch (Pulse) biked his way to victory, while Eilis Connery, who only started Duathlon last year lead from start to finish.

How it unfolded.

Results are listed below.

Barry Minnock (Rathfarnham WSAF) leading Brian Campbell (Hi-Elbo) on a sub 31:30 10km first run. Both men are back racing after impressive marathon debues last autumn; Minnock with a 2:24 in Lisbon and Campbell with a 2:28 in Dublin.

Another impressive marathon runner; Paul Carroll was 3rd in T1.

Derval Devaney who won WAR: Wicklow Adventure Race last weekend was 3rd into T1.

DSC_0065.JPG

Bronagh Ni Bhriain (Piranha/Wheelworx) was 4th into T1, but with her bike strength, it wasn't a position she would stay in for long.

DSC_0066.JPG

Kay Hack (Triangle) in 5th, with Sarah Lane (Belpark) close behind in 6th.

DSC_0075.JPG

Keane initially took the lead in the men's race, with probabely the most aerodynamic bike position in the field. It's hard to believe that only a few months ago, Keane was a mountain runner with no time trialling experience.

DSC_0082.JPG

Carroll shows the bike position more typical of former runners, not nearly as aerodynamic.

DSC_0083.JPG

Minnock had borrowed a bike for this race and never looked comfortable on it.

DSC_0152.JPG

Luddick was next into the lead (taking over from Keane).

DSC_0119.JPG

Lynch showed how it should be done. With the only sub-hour bike split (59:41) he moved up from 6th to 1st with a comfortable lead.

DSC_0144.JPG

Connery lost some time on the bike, but held onto 1st spot. Connery is on an entry level bike, showing that if you have class, you can win on anything.

DSC_0097.JPG

Local favorite Adam Speer was not enjoying himself. A bad day in what has been a great season for Speer.

DSC_0151.JPG

Ni Bhriain moved up into 2nd spot on the bike.

DSC_0101.JPG

Former elite duathlete Peter Savage (in Black) is overtaken by Philip Nolan (Belpark), while elite triathlete Aileen Morisson from the host club looks on.

DSC_0094.JPG

Stephen Harkins (Team Madigan) was outside the top ten starting the bike, but was 4th off it.

Next was Luddick.

DSC_0176.JPG

Keane was 3rd and looking to see if he had time to run down Lynch and Luddick.

DSC_0182.JPG

Harkins was 4th ahead of Donegar in 5th, but stomack cramps would all but end Madigan's race on the final run.

DSC_0214.JPG

Connery held onto her lead and arrived back into T2 with nobody able to stop her taking the her first of many National Titles.

DSC_0216.JPG

Ni Bhriain had moved up to 2nd on the cycle.

DSC_0222.JPG

However fleet footed lynch in 3rd spot had other ideas.

DSC_0238.JPG

Lynch takes his first National Title and the second one for Pulse Triathlon Club this year (Colin Bolger won the inter-varsities two weeks ago).

DSC_0244.JPG

Luddick closed in on Lynch, but had to settle for 2nd this time.

DSC_0251.JPG

Keane closed up on the leading pair on the run, but was also close to being caught by Campbell.
