Irish professional triathlete Bryan Keane took a major step towards joining the top tier of the sport with a breakthrough performance in the world’s richest race in Des Moines, USA yesterday (Sunday).

Keane finished in 20th place in the $1 million event, beating dozens of athletes placed higher than him in the World Championship Rankings, including two former championship winners. In the process the Corkman earned more vital Olympic qualifying points in the race for London 2012. The result is also a major boost for Keane ahead of the European Championships, which are being held on his home turf in Ireland next month.

Following a tough 1,500m swim that saw him drop off the front of the pack, Keane produced a blistering cycling performance to bridge a 1:45min gap between him and the race leaders on the 40km bike leg, passing more than 30 athletes along the way. The Corkman then picked his way through another 10 competitors during the 10km run leg to come home in a time of 1:52:00. Also racing in Des Moines over the weekend was Ireland’s Aileen Morrison, the Olympian put in a strong performance to finish in 27th place in the women’s event.

Bryan Keane’s next race is the European Championships, which are being held for the first time Athlone on July 4 2010. Keane won this race in his first season as a professional triathlete last summer and will be hoping to defend his title in the Co Westmeath town next month.
