Keane in 7th Heaven at Triathlon Sprint World Championships

Irish full-time triathlete Bryan Keane recorded another fantastic result over the weekend when he finished 7th in the triathlon sprint-distance World Championships in Switzerland. The Corkman beat a host of former World Championship Series winners to confirm his status as a world-class triathlete in the race, which was held in the town of Lausanne on Saturday.

Keane fought hard on the 750m swim to keep pace with the leading pack and excited Lake Geneva in the middle of the field. He then produced a characteristically aggressive cycling performance to move in to the top ten during the hilly and technical 20km bike course, recording the second fastest bike-split of the day in the process. The 30-year-old was able to sustain this level of performance on the 5km run to clinch seventh place overall in the race and cement his growing reputation as a top level contender in world triathlon.

Speaking afterwards Keane, who has been training in Switzerland as part of a new coaching programme, said the result meant a lot to him. “There were so many world-class athletes out there, so to beat that many of them was a great feeling. I’ve had a mixed season so far but hopefully things are getting back on track. I’ve been doing a lot of technical work on my swim stroke since I moved to Switzerland and I think that certainly helped over the weekend.”

Keane will be able to keep his feet dry during his next race, the Duathlon World Championships in Edinburgh, which takes place on September 5th. The run-bike-run format should suit the former international runner and Irish-team cyclist down to the ground. In the meantime Keane is set to return to his base in Davos and is due to link with the Aileen Morrison, Gavin Noble and the rest of the Irish elite triathlon squad who are currently training in St Moritz.
