Ironman 70.3 world championships: Eimear Mullan takes 8th spot

Eimear Mullan passed most of the women’s professionals on the run to finish 8th overall at today’s Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida.  Her impressive 1:24 half marathon run split allowed her to move up through the 20 professional women in the field including 3rd place finisher in Hawaii; Julie Dibens.

Robbie Wade was 2nd in the competitive 25-29 age group.  Robbie’s a Waterford native, but now based in the US.

Brian McCrystal (Setanta Tri) and Matt Molloy were also racing, but weren’t able to repeat their medal winning performances at the european championships in Athlone.

Bryan’s quote at the finish line “Bloody tough slog.. Very pleased with swim and bike but suffered big time with stomach cramps on the run and just had to get to the line.. That’s racing.. Americans are top class, GREAT JAB!! Thank you so so much to everyone.. Way off the podium but I’ll be back!! Arnie style..

The men’s winner for the second year in a row was uber-runner Michael Raelert from Germany, while Britain’s Jodie Swallow lead from start to finish in the women’s race.

Well done to all Irish athletes. Great stuff, and the field in the 25-29 female age group was a very strong one .

Brian, do you have more information on the reasoning of the Wtc, to let some of the female age groups start, in such a way , that they got swallowed up by big male bunches, making it an effective draft legal races for those age groups?
