Results from the 3rd Sive Sprint triathlon, which is organized by Sive Rowing Club as a fundraising event for the club.
Race report by Cian Murphy.
“Sive Triathlon 2011 took place in Cahirciveen on Saturday last under glorious sunshine for the 3rd year in succession. There were over 220 competitors in the event across both the individual and team competitions. Conditions were ideal making for a great spectacle. Sunshine, slack winds and dead flat water ensured great competition. Once again the local community really got behind this event, coming out in great numbers to lend their support to the competitors.
The overall race winner on the day was 16 year old Chris Mintern, who took home the perpetual Padraig Dineen memorial cup. Chris, who competes for Waterford Triathlon Club, completed this very challenging course in an incredibly fast time of 1:02:01. Chris posted incredibly strong times in each of the legs, completing the 750m swim in 9mins flat. This athlete is an exceptional talent with great prospects ahead. Chris was followed home by local man Aodh O’Neill in second place in a time of 1:03:22. Aodh posted the fastest bike and run splits. Aodh was also second in the recent national series Valentia triathlon. Third place on the day went to Tim Mahony, Midleton Triathlon Club in a time of 1:06:29.
The female race was won by Karina Teahan who competes for Cork Triathlon club. Karina completed the challenging course in a time of 1:15:44. Karina also won this event last year. Second overall female was Patricia McMahon, completing the course in a time of 1:18:08. Patricia who competes for Tralee Triathlon club was a previous winner of this race. Third place went to Geraldine Breen in a time of 1:19:03
The team competition was won by ‘The Otters’ who finished 3rd overall in a very credible time of 1:05:52. The team comprised of Kieran O’Callaghan, Billy Lucid and Arthur Fitzgerald.
Overall Sive Triathlon 2011 was another great success for Sive Rowing Club who is the organisers of this event. The event which has been consistently blessed with great weather was thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. The event also provided a much needed boost to the local economy. Roll on 2012.”
