  1. That’s weird. I could swear I did this race yesterday, and that I did it in a time of 6:37. I also could swear that there were at least ten more people who finished after me, but none of us are on this results list.

Very strange. Must have imagined the whole thing.

It worth pointing out that this comment was submitted by a member of the organising club. He doesn’t mention this fact in his comment, so it’s highlighted for transparence reasons.

I have to say I took part in the race and found the organisation second to none. The support and helpfulness of the entire team was amazing. Let’s not forget we are in a global recession and this could be one of the reasons numbers are down! Groomsport Ireman is an excellent event and would reccomend it to anyone. I noticed competitors from Spain, Scotland and England who all enjoyed it. A big thank you to everyone who was involved in organising this event and pushed and supported everyone“.

My first half iron distance triathlon.

A brilliant day. Groomsport is a great course, for athletes and spectators. The atmosphere is fantastic and (as with all races put on by the Triangle club) the organisation was second to none.

Being directed to ride on the footpath because of the parade in Donaghadee made me giggle. I won’t forget that one! Thanks for making my first race of this distance so memorable. I’m sure I’ll be back.

Groomsport-Good and bad points to race…

Good- nice gillet instead of goodie bag! great aid stations stocked with all the necessary gels, sweets, drinks, water and helpers full of encouragement on the run, lovely run course (i am not a trail runner) great swim course, lovely cove to swim in.

Bad- bike course disaster- roads were way too busy, inadequate signage for directions, four extremely busy roundabouts, traffic not managed properly for roundabouts or junctions, pot holes not marked on the 30k loop. Traffic lights on the course- seriously!!!!! No post race meal for athletes and no prizes for age groupers.

On balance good race but bike course is disaster!

  6. Brian, sorry for the sarcasm lol! Reading that again now it looks more snotty than I’d intended.

Re the bike course, yes, I also found it a bit weird to have to negotiate traffic at the roundabouts, but here’s the thing: during another tri earlier this year I had to fight off a dog at one point on the bike course. This is Ireland, it’s not a big country and not heavily populated. Tris here are more likely to be in atrocious weather, on less than ideal roads. I look at it as part of the experience, part of the challenge, part of the victory to complete races under those conditions, which in addition are not organised with the same clockwork precision of the Ironman machine. I can look at my time there and think: “That, my friends, is a greater achievement than its equivalent in a prestigious closed-roads race on smooth tar. I rock!”

I want to mention that the pretzels at the aid stations saved me. As I started the run, I was getting really nauseaous. I pounced on the pretzels, ate a few, and it settled my stomach immediately! Very pleased with that, and really grateful to every single marshal who gave up their time to let me add “half iron distance triathlon” to my list of accomplishments. I know there weren’t massive crowds roaring encouragement, but what spectators were there were all encouraging. I thoroughly enjoyed the race.

    Nadia,
No worries, I get things wrong all the time. It’s great to get quick feedback, so they can get them sorted quickly.
    Brian.

Really enjoyed the race. Was my first in Ireland – thought it was generally well run and a good atmosphere. I didn’t have any problems with the bike course – I got caught behind dawdlers through the town at one point but I’m sure everyone did. Then again I’m from London so I’m pretty confident in traffic! There were times when I wasn’t sure exactly where the run course was, but I figured that if I didn’t see an arrow for 5 minutes I’d probably gone wrong! Post-race massage was excellent, and the gilet was a really nice change from the umpteen t-shirts that I have at home. Will try to make it over next year too!
