Tri an Mhi Sprint triathlon – Collinstown

Results from the Tri an Mhi Sprint triathlon in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath.

Race report from Shane Monaghan

“Tri An Mhi’s Sprint Triathlon took place on Saturday 10th at Lough Lene in almost perfect conditions. Nearly 150 people participated in the event, and with marshals, volunteers and family supporters present, there was an excellent atmosphere. Lough Lene’s blue flag status meant the 750 metre swim in crystal clear water was ideal for both experienced and novice athletes.

Brian Harris (6th) was fastest out of the water at 9.19 with Gavin Doran (3rd) hot on his heels. The wind on the back of the cycle course proved testing with Paul Connolly (2nd) posting 30.27. The out-and-back 5 km run on closed roads had some inclines, and although Paul had the fastest individual run split of 17.50, he couldn’t overhaul the advantage David Richardson (1st) had over him from the swim.

In the Ladies race Irene Walsh’s (1st) swim gave her an unassailable lead over Eva McNelis (2nd), who passed Anne McGrane (3rd) on the run. Tri An Mhi would like to thank Lough Lene Fishing Club, Westmeath County Council, An Garda Siochana, Meath River Rescue, Mullingar Canoe Club, The Red Cross, TI’s TOs Adrian and Darren, the motorbike marshals, Willie and Sean, and all our volunteers, without whose help and support the event wouldn’t take place.”
