Race report by Eoin Ryan
“Drenched, muddy but Epic is the only way to describe Ireland’s off-road mountain bike Triathlon and Duathlon that took place in the lush forests of Courtown Harbour, Co. Wexford. One hundred competitors of all levels of fitness took on this challenge in the toughest of conditions. Monsoon rains pelted down on spectators and race marshals but it didn’t dampen the superb atmosphere that has become a hallmark of this intimate race. The race began with a choice of a 750m sea swim in calm conditions or a 2km trail run. From there it was a 10km cycle through some of Ireland’s oldest forests under the authority of Coillte, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Forest Park. This was followed by a 5km cross country run that involves crossing several rivers. ‘With the volume of rain the rivers rose at least 1 ft which added to the experience. The tougher it was the more people enjoyed it. We were all in it together – spectators, marshals and competitors and we all buzzed off each other’ says race organiser Eoin Ryan.
The winner was Adam Kelly from Wicklow who took the honours on his second attempt having being runner up in the past. The women’s race was won by a Dutch woman Kim Van Wijck. This is the fourth time the race has taken place in Courtown Harbour. It is a big community event that attracts people from the four corners of Ireland. ‘This year we had a couple who came over from Holland to do the race’ says Ryan. The race is also the smallest Triathlon in Ireland and according to Ryan it needs more participants to guarantee its future. This year he introduced the Duathlon (run, bike, run) for those who don’t like to swim in order to try and attract more participants and also reduced the entry fee.
The participants had high praise for the event as they filtered out of Transition to a warm shower in Forest Park Leisure centre. They took with them a highly rewarding feeling that not only did they finish the course but they also beat the elements in a unique race that will perhaps live longer in their memories than one of the standard races. Eireman X is a magnificent way to enjoy the great outdoors and natural landscape that we sometimes take for granted. To see a short video of the event go to www.eireman.org ”

The reason this race is so small is due to incredibly poor organisation/management plain and simple, every year there is always a disaster of some description with this race (timing chips I believe this year which must explain the ridiculous splits above). It’s a shame because it has the potential to be a really good race.
Also, the circulated video from “last years race” was clearly just thrown together with short clips of participants then the race organiser running around in his tri-suit to fill the gaps. I think this is quite dishonest from the organiser to pass this off as race footage when it’s clearly not and creates an atmosphere of skepticism over the event in general.
Dropping prices etc is the wrong way to attract people to this event as this just means that there’ll be more skimping on resources which will make good event management even tougher. Just focus on running a proper, well thought out and well managed event and address the constant (and repetitive!) problems that occur.
