Gavin Noble – Elite Triathlon update

February is not over yet I know but I hope to have no more news this month !

It has been a big week for me and between us for the rest of the month no news is good news.  (See 17th position finish in the South Africa ITU sprint triathlon race, which had questionable rule enforcement)

After a great Triathlon Camp at Altitude in Sierra Nevada I decided to keep in touch with the ITU racing and my ranking and race in Barbados last weekend – I was only there briefly (3 days) but came away with a satisfactory result in 5th. 5 hours after the race and I was already on a plane home to Dublin – in and out !

On Monday afternoon I joined other Lucozade ambassadors for the filming of a new ‘Club Crusade’ campaign which will be launched across Ireland in the next few weeks – we filmed a Television advert and shot some pictures for ‘in store promotions’ and other various forms of advertising. it was great to be part of the day, joining some of Irelands highest profile athletes across various sports – although it was a little bit cold to be running around Santry stadium in a singlet and shorts !

I had a productive couple of days in Dublin with Base2race and also Triathlon Irelands high performance physio Deirdre Burrell …. trying to get to the bottom of a persistent pain that I have been having in the last couple of months. A morning in Santry Sports Medicine clinic produced enough evidence for an injection into my lower leg and firm advice that I need to refrain from running for a short period. Injury is a fact of life in the business of endurance sport as we push out bodies to the their limits but hopefully I will be back to running soon.

So although I had the diagnosis on Wednesday i still decided to compete today in Cape Town – it was only ’5km’ and the specialist, Eanna Falvey, thought I would be able to ‘get away with it’ but I needed to rest afterwards. With some heavy strapping and not having been able to run for about 2 weeks I had no option but to focus on the swim and bike – trying to force a break on the bike leg like in Barbados and mean that I could pick up places having an advantage before the start of the run – it was not to be today. A flat course and a large competitive field – and unofficial rumours of some athletes not swimming the correct course meant a large bike pack straight out of transition. It was slightly painful to run – I felt it on the uphills not having run for a while ! and then of course in my leg running downhill.

But alas it is over now and I will look forward to tomorrow – some sun on my back in the pool in Stellenbosch, some rehab and some extra swimming and biking to fill my days.

I hope your well
