Owen Cummins – Emerald Racing team

Our first athlete to be introduced is a man with a formidable swim background who really grabbed the headlines in 2011 with some stellar performances and capped his season with 3rd Pro at Galway 70.3 despite the shortened swim leg on the day. This man has big plans and the talent to back them up…

What are your planned events/distances for 2012?
First race Challenge Fuertaventura on April 14th, other major goals include Ironman 70.3 UK, Ironman 70.3 European Champs and Ireland 70.3

What are your goals for 2012 and what are you working on now to make them happen?
Win a major international race, Improve on last years 3rd at Ironman 70.3 Galway. A lot of work in the gym to improve the second half the run.

Will you race in Ireland this year?
Yes, Ironman 70.3Galway, Tri Grand Prix Kilkenny and a few national series races.

What advantage does being Irish give you over your rivals?
I want to bring the never give up hard man Irish attitude to triathlon. A similar attitude that the Irish long distance runners of the 70’s and 80’s brought with the likes of John Tracey, Donie Walsh (my running coach), Eamon Coughlan and Jerry Kiernan. This attitude wasn’t just restricted to athletics, it was more than matched by the great Sean Kelly.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you?
I’m not exciting enough to have secrets!!
