How to score points in the Triathlon National Series
Scoring is based on your time relative to the time of the TI member, who’s finish time is calculated to be the 30th percentile time. If you’re finish time is 5% faster than the time of the 30th percentile person’s time, you will get 105 points. For a more detailed explanation of percentiles, have a look at Wikipedia.
Tips for scoring high Triathlon National Series points
Races which have a large proportion of beginners (eg. Valentia, Triathy, triAthlone, DublinCity) will have a relatively slow average time (and hence slow 30th percentile). This means that you should score more points in these. In 2010 the highest points were scored in Galway triathlon – Carna, in 2011 the highest points were scored in Valentia.
Races with a high standard of competitors (eg. Hell of the West, Beast of the East, Lost Sheep and the national championships) will all have a relatively fast average time (and hence fast 30th percentile). This means that you should score fewer points in these, with the example of the winner of the highly competitive Hell of the West in 2011, actually scored more points by winning the less competitive TriAthy sprint.
Individual Triathlon National Series
For each race in the National Series, the total score for the season will be the sum of the competitors scores
• Two best Olympic distance races that are part of the National Series.
• Two best sprint distance races that are part of the National series.
• The next best scoring race (olympic, sprint, or other distance) that are part of the National Series
Club Championships - Triathlon National Series
